Food Policy
Nurturing the growth and development of our children is what Hand In Hand is all about. Our food policy is designed to nourish our students in the best way possible. Our eating habits are formed at an early age and carry with us into adulthood. These habits have a significant impact on our health. Research shows 70% of disease in the U.S. is diet-related. What we choose to feed our children today is important to their health now and in the future.
Currently, only 1% of children in the U.S. eat the recommended levels of fruits, vegetables, and grains. Processed foods, devoid of nutrients and fiber and loaded with chemicals, have become the norm. Meat and dairy products, which are high in saturated fat, have pushed health-promoting, disease-fighting, plant-based foods off our plates. Hand In Hand strives to inspire our children to develop a taste for truly healthy food—food that is healthy for our bodies and clears our minds for optimal learning. We promote organic, whole foods.
Studies have shown that children who are fed natural whole grains, fruits, and vegetables do better in school. A study in New York City removed all the artificial colors, flavors, sugars, and additives from the cafeteria menus. Instead, they served natural whole grains, fruits, and vegetables for a five-year period. During those years, the average achievement test score went from below average to above average. Following the study, the menu returned to typical American junk food and test scores dropped back to the below average scores. Similar results are found in an Appleton, Wisconsin, high school where the menu was changed from the standard American diet to natural foods. In a nutshell, “grades are up, truancy is no longer a problem, arguments are rare, and teachers are able to spend their time teaching.”
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:19 “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own.” Our body is a gift from God and a vehicle to use in service to Him. He wants us to nourish ourselves in the best way possible. It is our desire at Hand In Hand to take a holistic approach to educating and caring for our children We need to feed their minds and bodies with quality “ingredients.”
